Monophysite Church of Assumption of Virgin Mary in Samshvilde Ruined Town

In central district of Samshvilde ruined town, near the first wall, on the right side of the road there is Armenian hall church of Assumption of Virgin Mary (coordinates 41.302777 44.294766). The peculiarity of the church is the pair of windows over each other in the east and west walls. The church was built either in the end of XVII c. or in the beginning of the XVIII c. In front of the altar apse there is a large erected stone – menhir - of pre-historical period; a cross and an Armenian inscription of 1621 was cut on it later (due to incorrect interpretation of the inscription, some researchers think that it was curved in the XI c.

In the east from the church there is a large horse statue – it’s a gravestone.

The monument of Bronze Age has also survived here – the so-called tetralyte: four stones on the top of each other, creating certain idea on believes and views of our ancestors.
