Mosque in Dmanisi Ruined Town
In central part of Dmanisi ruined town (Dmanisi municipality) there are ruins of large building with right-angled layout, internal and external walls of which are build of cut stone (coordinates: 41.201306 44.204480). In the middle of the south wall of the building semi-circular niche, the so-called mihrab is built in, determining the function of this structure – is represents a mosque. It is well-known that Muslim stands with his face to Mekkah, i.e. to the south, when praying. Mihrab is a praying niche, denoting the direction towards Mekkah. This mosque was intended for Dmanisi Muslims and it should be built in the end of the XIII c. or in the beginning of the XIV c. And Mekkah city is located in the south from Dmanisi. It should be mentioned that on the second site of Dmanisi another mosque, with minaret, of about the same period (XIII - XIV c.c.) was discovered> The existence of mosques and grave-stones with Arabic inscriptions prove that many Muslims, assembly, busy with trade, lived in this Medieval Georgian town.
